RJ Griffith Inspires Youth at “Don’t Start at the Park” Event Honoring Local Heroes in Peoria

Chicago-based singer-songwriter and actor RJ Griffith delivered a powerful performance and motivational speech on Saturday, June 28 at the annual Don’t Start at the Park event held at the RiverPlex in Peoria, Illinois. The community-driven gathering, organized by Joe Couri and War Muhammad, brought together local youth and families to celebrate real-life heroes including Peoria firefighters and public school resource officers, while promoting a message of positivity, leadership, and prevention.

The “Don’t Start” campaign encourages young people to steer clear of gangs, guns, drugs, bullying, and vaping. Instead, it urges them to stay in school, lead by example, and uplift their communities. Griffith, who is also the founder of the nonprofit Positive Vibes Only, was invited to perform and speak to the youth about making smart choices and believing in their own potential.

“Speaking to the next generation is something I don’t take lightly,” said RJ. “I’m a product of what happens when you choose the right path, even when it's not the easiest one. I’m here to show these kids that their story isn’t defined by where they start but by the choices they make every day.”

Griffith is known not only for his soulful music but also for his deep-rooted commitment to social impact. His nonprofit, Positive Vibes Only, uses music, mentorship, and community programming to create safe spaces for youth to express themselves and grow.

Also performing and speaking at the event were Joe Couri and War Muhammad, both respected community leaders who emphasized personal responsibility and the power of community in shaping a brighter future.

The event was a collaboration between local leaders and Positive Vibes Only, with activities, performances, and tributes to public servants who exemplify everyday heroism.
